However, persevere and there could be something - or someone - worth while waiting for you at the end.

To help you on your journey we've compiled a list of what to avoid and why…

Remember less is more

When writing or compiling your profile try to think about what keeps you keen and interested when reading other profiles. Keeping things short and sweet not only shows people that you are concise and don't waffle, but that you also know what you want.

Keep it real

When you upload images of yourself some people tend to leave in their best pics. However, if the photo is 15 years old and show you with a long-lost flat stomach and full head of hair, then keep it honest - ask a friend to take some updated versions instead. The same works with claiming you are a millionaire, own a yacht and drive a Ferrari - it's only impressive if it's true. There is no point in lying; people always find out.

Never, ever, give away money

No matter how well you get to know someone or feel your relationship has blossomed online, or in the flesh, never ever lend out money - whatever the circumstance.

Always be polite

In reality you wouldn't stop chatting to someone in the street mid-flow if they were boring you in a conversation; however, online you can. If an email conversation starts out well but then you realise this person isn't 'the one' then politely back away. Failing that, if they don't take the hint, then their emails conveniently getting 'lost in cyberspace' or ignoring all contact should also work.

Don't expect too much too soon

Online dating takes time. Therefore, buying a one month subscription to an online dating site seems a bit optimistic. You need to set goals and stick to them and if you follow the rules above and allow a relationship to blossom over time, then maybe, just maybe, Prince Charming will be waiting to carry you off into the sunset…

  If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

…come from everything else、put…first、 play a role in…

  It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor… It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.(这是美国人共同说出的答案,无论老还是少,富还是穷,长久以来,很多人一再被告知,要对我们所能取得的成绩极尽讥讽、担忧和怀疑之能事,但这个答案让这些人伸出手来把握历史之弧,并再次使它朝向美好明天的希望延伸。)

  这句话里young and old、rich and poor指代老少、穷富之人,cynical、 fearful, doubtful 是形容一些人的态度,讥讽,担忧和怀疑。 如果前面一句你用youngsters and old people、rich people and who are poor,虽然意思没变,但语言不工整也不精炼。

Bitterly、 angrily、and with tears in her eyes、 Jane finally retired. Bitterly, angrily 和with tears in her eyes都是形容Jane退休时的心情,那么我们是否可以试着把它们三个变成同样的语法结构?Bitterly、angrily and tearfully、Jane finally retired.

  And I would not be standing here without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years, the rock of my family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady, Michelle Obama.

I would not be standing here without是一个常用的致谢词,表示没有… Rice is indispensible to Chinese people. People in China cannot live one day without rice. His unyielding attitude on this subject was that since he had done it, so could everyone.

  最后让我们来看看他是怎样形容挚爱,the rock of my family,the love of my life. 对于另一半的称呼就像中文一样,英文中也有很多,比如 light of my life、better half、perfect match, etc.

  The only way that they can preserve their history is to recount it as sagas--legends handed down from one generation of story-tellers to another.

  Virginia Woolf’s provocative statement about her intentions in writing Mrs. Dalloway has regularly been ignored by the critics,since it highlights an aspect of her literary interests very different from the traditional picture of the "poetic" novelist concerned with examining states of reverie and vision and with following the intricate pathways of individual consciousness.

伍尔夫的具有争议性的陈述关于她的目的在写作《黛洛维夫人》”,完全转换 “Virginia Woolf’s provocative statement about her intentions in writing Mrs. Dalloway”。

  It has been estimated that the weight of all the insects destroyed by spiders in Britain in one year would be greater than the total weight of all the human beings in the country.

  This temptation to cover the distance between himself and the reader, to study his image in the sight of those who do not know him, can be his undoing: he has begun to write to please.

为什么you,we,they,he,she之类的人称代词不用大写呢?

《巴恩哈特语源学辞典》(The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology ,W H. W. Wilson,1988)中就有这样的解释:
"The pronoun 'I' developed from the unstressed form of Old English (about 725) ic singular pronoun of the first person (nominative case). Modern and Middle English I developed from earlier i in the stressed position. I came to be written with a capital letter thereby making it a distinct word and avoiding misreading handwritten manuscripts. In the northern and midland dialects of England the capitalized form I appeared about 1250."

《莫里斯字词源词典》(Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins)也指出,把I(我)大写与ego(自我意识)无关,只是为了避免混淆和错误(the reason for the capital I is simply to avoid confusion and error)。

比如用英文说:“Everybody please stand up.”

Yes, but I'm telling you——we could ring Nevin to drive us there.

7. I told you so.

I told you so! You wouldn't believe me.

8. something tells me

Something tells me it's going to rain.

9. Tell me another.

Oh yeah, tell me another.

10. You tell me.

-How can we take it from the box, d'you know?
-You tell me!

1. Read only the first sentence of a paragraph.

  If your author is a good author, he or she will begin each paragraph with a key statement that tells you what that paragraph is about. By reading only the first sentence, you can determine if the paragraph has information you need to know.

  If you're reading literature, this still applies, but know that you may miss details that enrich the story. When the language in literature is artful, I would choose to read every word.

  2. Skip to the last sentence of the paragraph.

  The last sentence in a paragraph should also contain clues for you about the importance of the material covered. A last sentence often serves two functions -- it wraps up the thought expressed and provides a connection to the next paragraph.

  3. Read phrases.

  When you've skimmed first and last sentences and determined the paragraph is worth reading, you still don't need to read every word. Move your eyes quickly over each line and look for phrases and key words. Your mind will automatically fill in the words between.

  4. Ignore the little words.

  Ignore the little words like it, to, a, an, and, be -- you know the ones. You don't need them. Your brain will see these little words without acknowledgment.

  忽略诸如it,to,a,an,and,be等“小词”-这些词你太熟悉了。

  5. Look for key points.

  Look for key points while you're reading for phrases. You're probably already aware of the key words in the subject you're studying. They'll pop out at you. Spend a little more time with the material around those key points.

6. Mark key thoughts in the margins.

  I know you were taught not to write in your books, and some books should be kept pristine, but a textbook is for studying. Mark key thoughts in the margins. If it makes you feel better, use a pencil. Even better, buy a packet of those little stickie tabs and slap one on the page with a short note.When it's time to review, simply read through your tabs.

  If you're renting your textbooks, make sure you understand the rules.

  7. Use all the tools provided -- lists, bullets, sidebars.

  Use all the tools the author provides -- lists, bullets, sidebars, anything extra in the margins. Authors usually pull out key points for special treatment. They're clues to important information. Use them all. Besides, lists are usually easier to remember.

  8. Take notes for practice tests.

  When you read something you know will show up on a test, write it down in the form of a question. Note the page number beside it so you can check your answers if necessary.

  Keep a list of these key questions and you'll have written your own practice test.

  9. Read with good posture.

  Reading with good posture helps you read longer and stay awake longer. Give your body a break. Sit in a healthy way and you'll last a lot longer.

  Much as I love to read in bed, it puts me to sleep. If reading puts you to sleep, too, don't read lying down.

  10. Practice, practice, practice.

  Reading fast takes practice, practice, practice. Practice makes all the difference.

  Pretty soon you'll be reading faster without even realizing it.

(Fox)

(DirecTV 101/NBC)

(Fox)

Argentina has become the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage.

The move grants homosexual couples all the legal rights, responsibilities and protections that marriage gives heterosexual couples.

President Cristina Fernandez is a strong supporter and the new law is expected to bring a wave of marriages.

The approval came despite a concerted campaign by the Roman Catholic Church and evangelical groups, which drew 60,000 people to march on Congress and urged parents in churches and schools to work against passage.

Nine homosexual couples have already married in Argentina after persuading judges that Argentina's constitutional mandate of equality supports their marriage rights, but some of these marriages were later declared invalid.

The debate stretched on for nearly 16 hours.

"Marriage between a man and a woman has existed for centuries, and is essential for the perpetuation of the species," insisted Senator Juan Perez Alsina, who is usually a loyal supporter of the president but gave a passionate speech against legalizing same-sex marriage.

However, Senator Norma Morandini, another member of the president's party, compared the discrimination closeted gays face to the oppression imposed by Argentina's dictators decades ago. "What defines us is our humanity, and what runs against humanity is intolerance."

Same-sex civil unions have been legalized in Uruguay, Buenos Aires and some states in Mexico and Brazil. But Argentina now becomes the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. Homosexual couples who marry will now get many more rights than civil unions, including adopting children and inheriting wealth.

它表示:to say in an advertisementthat you use a particularproduct and like it. Well-known sportsmen can earn large sums of money from manufacturesby endorsing clothes and equipment.(著名运动员在广告中替厂家宣传运动服装和器械,可获得巨额报酬。)

  代言人:brand spokesman/spokeswoman

Just so so","Fair to middling"也是蛮不错的妙语佳句。

  His work is only fair, certainly not distinguished.(他的工作只能称做一般,算不上出色。)

  He is a skier of middling skill.(他的滑雪技术一般般。)

  What you say is true, for fair.(你说得对,一点没错!)

  A: How are you?(过得怎么样?)

  B: Fair to middling.(还行,不算差。)

China Daily!

  In fair weather prepare for the foul.

  Although the sun shine, leave not your cloak at home.

那么这句话用英语如何说呢?GOOD GOOD STUDY, DAY DAY UP? 其实应该是说"study hard and make progress every day"

Life on Earth is wiped out every 27 million years – and we have about 16 million years left until the next extinction, according to scientists.

  Research into so-called ‘extinction events’ for our planet over the past 500 million years - twice as long as any previous studies - has proved that they crop up with metronomicregularity.

  Scientists from the University of Kansas and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC are 99 per cent confident that there are extinctions every 27 million years.

In the 1980s scientists believed that Earth’s regular extinctions could be the result of a distant dark twin of the Sun, called Nemesis.

  The theory was that Nemesis crashed through the Oort cloud every 27 million years and sent a shower of comets in our direction.

  The Oort cloud is a vast belt of dust and ice that is believed to lie around one light year from the Sun and is the origin of many of the comets that pass through our solar system.

But now scientists claim that the regularity of the mass extinctions actually disproves the Nemesis theory because its orbit would have changed over time as it interacted with other stars.

  ‘Fossil data, which motivated the idea of Nemesis, now militateagainstit,’ say the researchers.

The last extinction event, 11 million years ago, saw 10 per cent of the Earth’s inhabitants wiped out.

  This means there is around 16 million years until the next event takes place, although the graph shows that it occasionally the event takes place up to 10 million years early.

  Asteroidscrashing into the Earth are commonly believed to be one of the main reasons behind mass extinctions like that suffered by the dinosaurs - the Cretaceous-Tertiary(KT) extinction.

  The extinction wiped out more than half of all species on the planet clearing the way for mammals to become the dominant species on Earth.

  The extinction was caused by a massive asteroid slamming into Earth at Chicxulub in Mexico.

  The asteroid, which was around 15 kilometres wide, is believed to have hit Earth with a force one billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.

In a bid to plugdwindlingdomestic consumption by tapping intooverseas markets, some of Japan's big-name retailers are telling their employees to start speaking English -- or find another job.

  As Japan's population shrinks, the country's retailers are increasingly looking to boost sales by expanding abroad and some firms are waking up tothe necessity of being able to speak the global language of business in order to succeed overseas.

  Rakuten, Japan's biggest online retailer, plans to make English the firm's official language, while Fast Retailing, operator of the Uniqlo apparelchain, wants to make English more common in its offices by 2012 and plans to test its employees for proficiency.

"It's about stopping being a Japanese company. We will become a world company," Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani said last week at a news conference in Tokyo -- conducted almost entirely in English.

  Employees at Rakuten, which hopes overseas sales will eventually account for 70 percent of all transactions made through its websites, will need to master English by 2012 to avoid facing the sack.

 "No English, no job," Mikitani told the Asahi newspaper.

  Other high-profile Japanese companies, including automakers Toyota Motor and Nissan Motor, have announced moves to make the use of English more common in the workplace.

  Some experts say the switch to English is healthy but just one of the changes companies need to make to go global.

  "What's interesting is that these companies really stand out as pioneers," Jeff Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University's Japan campus.

  "They have a relatively new outlook. They realize that Japan is going to need to strike into foreign markets given the dormantstate of its economy," he said.

You share a lot with your coworkers over time: Projects. Lunches, Office space. Cocktails. Family photos. Birthday cake. But, even after many years of working together, should you share the details of your salary and compensation package?

  No, says compensation expert Dick Dauphinais of Strategic Compensation Partners. "We all know employees talk, and things can never remain totally confidential," he says. "But an outright exchange of salary details probably isn't the best idea."

  Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe

  When companies have different employees on the same job and one of them is paid differently, many unfairness issues surface. "It can happen in any 'open shop' that differentiates pay for any reason (seniority, performance, etc.)," says Dauphinais. You could run the risk of alienating valued colleagues if they learn you earn more for what they perceive to be the same job.

Democracy Doesn't Always Work at Work

  There are organizations that openly share compensation information around the office. However, warns Dauphinais, "Unless all similar jobs pay the same rate, I would advise that open salary concepts don't work well."

  The confidential nature of your salary, in fact, can be a greater benefit to you. "It creates an opportunity for a manager to have a confidential discussion with employees as to why they are being paid what they are -- and how they can work toward making more money," he says. "Each employee can then move forward with confidence that they have 'bonded' with their supervisor on their individual issues -- good and bad -- without involving others in the process."

Don't Let Under-Compensation Undermine You

  If you learn that someone who holds a similar position earns a bigger paycheck, don't panic. First, do some due diligence to determine if you are being underpaid in general. Use the Yahoo! HotJobs salary calculator, and also reach out to your out-of-office network to find out how people at other companies are being compensated.

  Next, says Dauphinais, "I would go to my boss and ask the reasons why." Open a rational dialogue to understand what skills or experience you'll need to improve your performance -- and earn more recognition and financial rewards.

  If — Rudyard Kipling

  If you can keep your head when all about you

  Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

  如果周围的人毫无理性地向你发难,你仍能镇定自若保持冷静;

  If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

  But make allowance for their doubting too;

  如果众人对你心存猜忌,你仍能自信如常并认为他们的猜忌情有可原;

  If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

  Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,

  Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,

  或遭人憎恨却不以恶报恶;

  And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

  既不装腔作势,亦不气盛趾高;

  If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

  如果你有梦想,而又不为梦主宰;

  If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

  如果你有神思,而又不走火入魔;

  If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

  And treat those two impostors just the same;

  如果你坦然面对胜利和灾难,对虚渺的胜负荣辱胸怀旷荡;

  If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

  Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

  Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

  And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools;

  或看着心血铸就的事业崩溃,仍能忍辱负重脚踏实地重新攀登;

  If you can make one heap of all your winnings

  And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

  And lose, and start again at your beginnings

  And never breathe a word about your loss;

  面临失去,决心从头再来而绝口不提自己的损失;

  If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

  To serve your turn long after they are gone,

  And so hold on when there is nothing in you

  Except the Will which says to them:"Hold on";

  身上已一无所有,唯存意志在高喊“顶住”;

  If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

  Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;

  亦或与王侯散步而不露谄媚之颜;

  If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;

  如果敌友都无法对你造成伤害;

  If all men count with you, but none too much;

  如果众人对你信赖有加却不过分依赖;

  If you can fill the unforgiving minute

  With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

  如果你能惜时如金利用每一分钟不可追回的光阴;

  Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

  And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
